How to Show Up on Google Maps When Someone Searches 'Church Near Me'

Every week, thousands of people in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and cities across Nigeria open Google Maps and type "church near me."

What determines who appears in those results? Why does one church show up in the top three while another โ€” perhaps larger, perhaps older โ€” doesn't appear at all?

The answer is Google Business Profile optimization โ€” and most Nigerian churches are getting it completely wrong.

What Is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that powers Google Maps and the local search results panel that appears when you search for businesses or organizations nearby.

When done correctly, your Google Business Profile tells the world:

  • Who you are and what you stand for
  • Where you are located (with a clickable map)
  • What time your services happen
  • What people say about you (reviews)
  • Photos of your community
  • Answers to common questions

When done incorrectly โ€” or not at all โ€” you simply don't exist in the most used local search tool on the planet.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Profile

If your church doesn't have a Google Business Profile yet, go to business.google.com and create one. If it already exists (Google sometimes creates auto-generated profiles), claim it and verify ownership.

Verification usually happens via a postcard sent to your physical address, or via phone or email for eligible accounts.

This step alone puts you ahead of a significant number of Nigerian churches.

Step 2: Complete Every Single Field

Most profiles are only 40โ€“60% complete. Google rewards completeness with higher rankings.

Fill in:

  • Name: Your official church name, exactly as it appears on your signage
  • Category: Select "Church" as your primary category, then add secondary categories (e.g., "Non-denominational church," "Pentecostal church") as applicable
  • Address: Your full, accurate street address
  • Service hours: Every day you hold services or have office hours
  • Phone number: A number someone can actually call and get a response
  • Website: Your church website URL
  • Description: A 750-character description that includes your location, denomination, service style, and who you serve

Step 3: Add High-Quality Photos

Profiles with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than those without photos (Google data).

Upload:

  • An exterior photo of your building (helps people recognize it when they arrive)
  • Interior photos of your auditorium
  • Community photos of real congregation members (not stock images)
  • Photos from recent events and services
  • Your logo as the profile photo

Aim for at least 10โ€“15 photos to start, and add new ones regularly.

Step 4: Collect and Respond to Reviews

Google reviews are one of the most powerful ranking factors in local search. A church with 50 reviews and a 4.8-star rating will consistently outrank one with 5 reviews and a 4.2 rating.

How to get more reviews:

  • At the end of service, personally ask members: "Would you be willing to leave us a Google review? It helps people find us."
  • Send a WhatsApp broadcast with your Google review link (find it in your Business Profile dashboard)
  • Follow up with new visitors and ask for their feedback

Respond to every review โ€” positive and negative. A thoughtful response to a negative review demonstrates pastoral care and professionalism.

Step 5: Post Regular Updates

Google Business Profile has a "Posts" feature that most organizations completely ignore. These posts appear directly in your search listing and signal to Google that your profile is active and relevant.

Post at least once a week:

  • Upcoming services or special events
  • Sermon series announcements
  • Community initiatives
  • Scripture-based encouragement

The Result: Being Found Before You're Searched

When all of these elements are in place, something powerful happens. Your church begins appearing to people who have never heard of you โ€” people who are genuinely searching for a spiritual home in your neighbourhood.

This is what we call the Local Beacon effect: your church becoming the most visible, most trustworthy option in your local area before a single conversation takes place.

Our Local Beacon service handles all of this for you โ€” the setup, the optimization, the monthly posts, and the ongoing monitoring. Contact us to learn how we can make your church the first result people see.
